Last Gasp 1990-94
It’s true that underground comics that had plenty of tits, ass and fucking sold better than those that did not. Armegeddon was included along with 5 other comics as All New Underground Comics but was the only one that merited 3 other issues: certainly not because of the art, which was horrendous, but probably because every page had naked women and there was plenty of fucking. Guy Colwell’s Doll went 8 issues (3 of them basically reprints of the others) using the same formula, as well as Omaha the Cat Dancer and of course Cherry Poptart, queen of the hardcore porn comics. Young Lust parlayed a pretty tame soft-core sex format into 2 decades of issues.
This wraps up a huge 32 title Last Gasp run, with some of the series including as much as 17 issues, as this one does. There’s more that goes into posting these than you might think.
First we research the best titles. Then we try to locate them on ‘net, or we scan our own comics. Often we need to fill in an issue or more to complete a series. There are dozens of sites on the net that allow free downloads of underground and rare comics. We search them out and assemble the bet, fill in missing issues of series and add related titles, like the Wimmin’s Comix series has recently been released as a hard-cover collection along with related titles by the same artists, It Ain’t Me Babe. Or the Tits & Clits series, recently published with Pandora’s Box and Abortion Eve.
This series, Horny Biker Sluts, also includes 2 issues of Shemale Troubles by the same artists.
After the series, we sort, number and resize the pages. Sometimes centerfolds and other doubles must be bisected and assigned as 2 different pages. Then thumbs for the front pages used on the group pages. We usually add all the new titles to the publisher group page to keep track of them, like this Last Gasp page. Then, if it’s a series, we create a homepage for the series, like this Horny Biker Sluts page.
One shots and subpages for series are created, like this single issue Horny Biker Slut #8 page. The next step is adding the title to the publisher’s group page, and if it’s a series creating a custom menu for the series, then an IKS (auto-collapse) menu and add those to the custom widgets, so that each page in a series has its own group of menues. The main title page is researched and content is added, then each individual issue has artist, stories, publishing info and dates added.
These sites have proven invaluable for supplying context and information about the various issues and series:
The Comixjoint is the premier site for reviews, commentary and issue synopsis and title and publisher history for pre-1980s comics. Unfortunately, the site seems to have been abandoned, and the end of the alphabet (around “T” or so) titles got a listing, but never got an article, which is a shame. It’s just the best resource on the net and the primary source for titles pre-1980 and the golden age of underground comics.
Sir Reals Underground Comics Classics is great for artist listings and individual contents list for comics. Sir Real goes a bit further into the ’80s than Comixjoint, but not by much.
My Comics Shop and the Grand Comics Database seem sto be up to date with every comic ever released up to the present, and MyComics offers synopsis on many titles Comixjoint never covered, as well as dates. GCD usually has the entire contents list, dates and artists for nearly ever comic extant.
EC Comics Fandom is great for info about classic EC Comics. Don Marksteins Toonpedia is a good fall-back for old comic info. Gamespot’s Comic Vine, Mystery Comics Digest, DC Comics Database, League of Comics Geeks, Atomic Avenue and Women in Comics Wiki have all contributed info when the main sources could not. Kitchen Sink, Last Gasp, Print Mint and Rip-off Press websites also contain a lot of information. We’ve included reviews and synopses for many Fantagraph titles from the Slings and Arrows graphic novel guide.
There are tons of download sites, too many to list, but the internet Archive is the primary source, besides our own collections, for the comics found here. We try to include a link to donate to the artists when one can be found. Finding, researching, downloading and filling in the content, dates, publisher info, artists, synopsis and story list is probably the most time consuming part of the process.
So, when the pages are all ready, the menus set up, we create individual sliders for each issue and add them to the pages. The pages are added to the main menus and the main comics page.
Lastly, we do a blog post for subscribers so they know when a new titles is ready, that’s usually the last step. We are reaching the limits of our hosting package, so the site may just be considered complete and no more new titles will be added, although we have hundreds. We’ll have to see response to the latest resurgence and a quadrupling of the size of the site this year after the redesign and relaunch. Donations would help as well (see button on every page).
