Last Gasp 1972
Big League Laffs is where sports meets underground comix. The result is a mixed bag. It’s kind of hard to work up a belly laugh over teammates killing a rookie outfielder who drops a potential game-winning fly ball (“Big League Rookie”). Of course, this is an underground comic, so anything goes, and senseless violence is rampant in undergrounds. But somehow this story just put me off. And I love sports and I love animals, but when underground sports comix start co-mingling with underground animal comix, I start to lose interest. With a few exceptions, Jim Himes’ artwork is pretty mediocre and the stories just aren’t compelling or funny. Himes has put out several other comic books and stories that are quite enjoyable. This just isn’t one of them.
