Larry Todd’s Dr. Atomic comic book series was born from the popularity of the original strips published in the early 1970s underground newspaper The Sunday Paper. The first issue reprints strips that appeared in the tabloids, including two major stories; “Dr. Atomic and his Spaceship” and “Dr. Atomic Meets The Space Brothers.” In between these stories are a series of shorter tales, including “Dr. Atomic invents the Iron Pig,” “The Great Bank Robber,” “A Horny Old Geezer Is He,” and “Divine Comedy.” Ironically, there is no dope smoking to be found in the inaugural issue.
The debut issue of Dr. Atomic is most notable for breathing additional life into the characters of Dr. Otto Atomic and Billy Kropotkin, leading to five more successful issues in this series, plus the incomparable Dr. Atomic’s Marijuana Multiplier.
