Last Gasp June 1972
The creative collaboration between Roger Brand, Justin Green, Bill Griffith, Nancy Griffith, Jay Kinney, Art Spiegelman, Spain and Robert Crumb led to the underground comix Young Lust # 3. Young Lust #3 was issued in 1972 by the Californian publishing company Last Gasp. Young Lust parodies romance comics which gain popularity in the late 1940s and remain widely read until the 1970s. The third issue features five different main stories, On the Rocks, Burger Lust, Let It Be, A Karmic Kind of Love, Silas Coe and Lala Faloozie and Hard On a Fella!, which involve seemingly unrelated characters.1 The anthology humorously discusses themes such as the institution of marriage, the role of sex in romantic relationships and the breakdown of traditional gender roles.
One of the fathers of underground comix and authors of Young Lust #3 Robert Crumb has consistently displayed interest in the aforementioned matters. Even though the 70-year-old author has been often criticized for his controversial display of women, he claims that he firmly stands against patriarchy. Crumb addresses taboo subjects with enthusiasm and humor which could be seen in his new creations – Self-Loathing Comics and Art & Beauty Magazine.
