Yentzer and Gonif Comic Production 1976
Bicentennial Gross-Outs may not be the first comic that comes to mind when listing some of the all-time underground greats, but it really should be, primarily on the strength of two feature stories. One is William Stout’s masterful parody of Disneyland, “Realityland,” which includes a visit to “Sexual Fantasyland.” The other is “Beddy Bi-Centennial Story” from Icelandic Codpiece Comics Studios (a collective of the following comic creators: Brian McBean, Christofer, Gervasio Loma, Jim Ferguson, Bob Taylor and Errol McCarthy).
Bicentennial Gross-Outs is certainly one of my favorite books, and another example of why I extend the underground comic book historical era to 1980 instead of ending it in 1974 or 5 or 6. Although it doesn’t have any contributions from the founding fathers of the movement, it is distinctly underground in appearance, attitude and politics. I’d have a hard time putting this book (or Anarchy Comics or Dyke Shorts or Class War Comix or Whole Wheat Comics or Edge City) in the Alternative Comics section when they were a continuation of the underground comics movement and were clearly distinct from early alternative comics like Andromeda, Love and Rockets and Raw.
