Last Gasp October 1972
Merton of the Movement features four contributors who were members of Dan O’Neill’s Air Pirates collective, which raised hell with Disney’s trademark characters in the Air Pirates series. There is no such controversy here, though there is one cartoon panel of a baby Bobby London suckling on Minnie Mouse’s left boob. Hee hee!
Instead, Merton of the Movement provides two full stories by London along with short story by Ted Richards and a series of strips by Gary Hallgren and Shary Flenniken. Most of the work is solid, but London stands out in particular with his strip about detailing his early career squabbles with the editors of the Berkeley Tribe.
As a Cocoanut Comix production, Merton of the Movement was a comic book created from the Air Pirates collective, a cartoonist group which included all the contributors to this book.
