Anus-Clenching Adventure with Harold Hedd, aka Harold Hedd #2, came out in September of 1973, and is generally considered the best Canadian underground comic from the golden era. Without question, it’s one of my all-time favorite undergrounds. It’s one long Harold Hedd story, “Wings Over Tijuana,” a drug-smuggling adventure which is brilliantly written and illustrated. In a complex plot, Hedd and his cousin Elmo end up flying a 1942 WW2 bomber plane loaded with pot from Mexico to British Columbia; a dangerous mission with unexpected consequences.
Rand Holmes never tried to disguise his affection (or usage) of marijuana in his life or in his comics, and Harold Hedd #2 is a prime example of his passion for pot. But even if you don’t indulge in the magical weed, you are sure to find enjoyment in this rollicking adventure, which is cinematic in scope and provides a fine synopsis for a great buddy flick.
