#03 Boone’s Farm Apple Wine Mice
Kitchen Sink August 1972
Not long after Smile #2 was published, Dennis Kitchen and Krupp Comic Works put out the third and final issue of the title. Like its predecessor, Smile #3 offers Jim Mitchell artwork on the front and back covers, but this time the content is more like the first issue, with a few longer-form stories instead of dozens of short panel strips that had been previously published in syndication. When this issue came out in the summer of ’72, the Krupp syndicate had already bitten the dust, so most of the stories here were either created specifically for the comic book or were just lying around the Krupp office.
Unfortunately, this would be Jim Mitchell’s final work in underground comics, as he got busted for pot in Mexico City shortly after this came out and spent nearly five years in the slammer. Today he’s producing much more interesting work than he did here, which probably can be said for most of the people involved in this final issue of Smile.
