Avid fans of underground comics already know that Bill Griffith’s Zippy the Pinhead transcends the genre and appeals to all manner of fans of offbeat pop culture comics. Zippy is a microcephalic character who was based in part on Schlitzie the Pinhead, who appeared in the classic 1932 horror film, Freaks. If you haven’t seen the creepy Tod Browning film, it’s well worth checking out, as it holds up quite well today and (six decades later) also inspired an excellent four-issue comic-book adaptation by Jim Woodring and F. Amazon Comics is an underappreciated masterpiece from the golden era of underground comics. Frank Stack begins the book with an epic battle-of-the-sexes tale with a feminist slant and ends it with an academic debate about the same story at a gathering of college professors and one notable graduate student. This is a terrific, funny and undervalued underground comic featuring remarkable art and insightful writing from Frank Stack. (more…)

Added 6 classic single issue r. crumb comics to the 2 issues of BIGASS, including some of his most ‘misogynistic.

Some reorganization on the site. We eliminated the R. Crumb category, which was kind of a catch-all of single issues. However, we have now accumulated enough Print Mint/Apex (they often published the same titles or took over each other’s titles) and Golden Gate to make separate categories.

Others were moved to Rip-Off Press, Kitchen Sink and Last Gasp.

Unlike many underground comics, there’s little information on Horny Stories & Comix. Script, Pencils, Inks & Letters are credited to Grass Green, th pen name of an artist who also went by Eric Dann, Oren Evers, Grass Hoppa, Richard “Grass” Green, Richard Eugene Green. Al Krapp Tand R. G. Wilerholt. This may have been an individual, several artists or an entire house going by one name. One reason for the lack of documentation is this title wasn’t from the classic golden age of underground comics, coming relatively late in the early ’90s. (more…)

Of all the pop culture reference points that influenced underground comic creators and publishers, none were greater than EC Comics, which flourished during the childhoods of the forefathers of the underground. It seemed inevitable that underground artists would pay tribute to EC Comics, especially the horror and crime titles that broke new ground in depictions of terror and gore. Sure enough, Rip Off Comix launched Skull Comics just two years after Zap Comix enabled the type of content that EC once revelled in. (more…)

8 more crumb centric one-two shot comics added.
While underground comics had brought Robert Crumb significant social popularity and financial wealth by 1969, he also endured quite a bit of criticism for the way his comics portrayed chauvinism and outright hostility towards women. After the hyper-smut content of the Snatch and Jiz digests, Crumb said that he hoped the raw porn in those books had broken all the sexual taboos and would subsequently allow cartoonists to move on to something else.

Fritz the Cat is a comic strip created by Robert Crumb. Set in a “supercity” of anthropomorphic animals, it focused on Fritz, a tabby cat who frequently went on wild adventures that sometimes involved sexual escapades.

Dirty Laundry Comics #1 was published by Keith Green and Cartoonists Co-op Press in the summer of 1974. It features a single, rambling story that mixes insights on their relationship with a spaceship fantasy featuring LSD guru Timothy Leary (a huge fan of underground comics).

R. Crumb Big Ass Comics

Robert Crumb had already produced or contributed to a multitude of comics in 1968 and early ’69, including three issues of Zap Comix and the smut digests Snatch and Jiz, not to mention all the stuff he did for tabloids (like Yarrowstalks and the East Village Other) and magazines like Help! and Cavalier. While underground comics had brought Crumb considerable social and financial status, he also endured quite a bit of criticism for his chauvinism and outright hostility towards women. After the hyper-smut content of the Snatch and Jiz comics, Crumb said that he hoped the raw porn in those books had broken all the sexual taboos and would subsequently allow cartoonists to move on to something else. In the spring of 1969 Crumb produced Motor City Comics #1, which introduced one of his most earnest feminist characters, Lenore Goldberg. The Goldberg character still perpetuated some aspects of Crumb’s sexism, but she was his strongest female figure up to that time.

Guy Colwell created this adults-only series, which somehow manages to be sleazy and highbrow at the same time. Its star character is a sort of life-sized, robotic sex-slave—“a real live doll.” Doll is loaned out by two psychologists to be a sex-surrogate for their patients. (more…)
