Last Gasp (1972-81)
Unlike the purely anti-drug comic book undergrounds from the 1970s (e.g., Dope Comix), Larry Todd’s Dr. Atomic celebrates the joys and adventures associated with the magical herb of marijuana. Along the way, we are challenged to comprehend the myriad scientific inventions and concepts offered by Dr. Atomic throughout this series. Everything is presented with a wry sense of humor with splashes of slapstick comedy and inventive sight gags.

JayNaylor.com (2003-09)
In 2003 Naylor created the webcomic Better Days, which focused on the development of Fisk as he grew up in Georgia.
Naylor’s second webcomic, New Worlds, was set in an 18th century fantasy world. An adult comic featuring New Worlds characters, Mercedes & The Wolf, was also produced. Naylor abandoned the comic in the middle of a chapter, and has stated he plans to eventually rework the story from the beginning to be less of a comic and more of an illustrated novel. Naylor also created the non-furry science fiction war comic Hell For Humanity, which was abandoned in 2006.
Kitchen Sink (1972-90)
The underground comic book era’s golden age was replete with homages and tributes to the pre-Code EC comic book era of the early 1950s. Bogeyman was one of the first and Skull Comics was one of the most successful (six solid issues in less than three years). A few months before Last Gasp published the last issue of Skull in the fall of 1972, Kitchen Sink launched Death Rattle, which produced three issues in its first year before fading away. The title was revived for a second volume by Kitchen Sink Press in 1985 for a sweet 18-issue, three-year run. Seven years later, Kitchen Sink dug up the old favorite for a third volume of five issues.
EC comics (1952-56)
Mad began as a comic book published by EC, debuting in August 1952 (cover date October–November). The comic consisted of parodies of popular comics, tv shows, movies, advertising and other aspects of popular culture.
The first issue was written almost entirely by Harvey Kurtzman, and featured illustrations by Kurtzman, along with Wally Wood, Will Elder, Jack Davis, and John Severin. Wood, Elder, and Davis were the three main illustrators throughout the 23-issue run of the comic book.

Kitchen Sink (1972-82)
One of the great series in underground history, Denis Kitchen’s Bizarre Sex was launched in May, 1972. One could discern that this would be a “no-holds-barred” type of publication upon perusing the first issue, as the first two stories were about brother/sister incest and interracial homosexuality. Bizarre Sex became best known for issue #9, which introduced Omaha the Cat Dancer with a story that took up the whole book. After another appearance in Bizarre Sex #10, Omaha moved on to its own successful serial.
Kitchen Sink (1968-73)
Bijou Funnies (1968-73) was born in Chicago in the summer of 1968, just six months after Zap Comix #1, and evolved into one of the most important underground comic book series in history. The first issue featured Jay Lynch (also the editor) Skip Williamson, Jay Kinney, Gilbert Shelton and Robert Crumb, launching a comic anthology that by today’s entertainment standards (or even the standards of 1968) appears relatively mild and hardly revolutionary. Last Gasp (1967-88)
Zap Comix was an underground comix series which was originally part of the youth counterculture of the late 1960s. While a few small-circulation self-published satirical comic books had been printed prior to this, Zap became the model for the “comix” movement that snowballed after its release. The title itself published 17 issues over a period of 46 years. The first 15, from the classic period, are posted here.
Rip Off Press (1989-1992)
Guy Colwell created this adults-only series, which somehow manages to be sleazy and highbrow at the same time. Its star character is a sort of life-sized, robotic sex-slave—“a real live doll.” Doll is loaned out by two psychologists to be a sex-surrogate for their patients. (more…)
