Frontline Combat added

FRONTLINE COMBAT
EC Comics (1951-54)
Frontline Combat is an anthology war comic book written and edited by Harvey Kurtzman and published bi-monthly by EC Comics. The first issue was cover dated July/August, 1951. It ran for 15 issues over three years, and ended with the January, 1954 issue. Publication was discontinued following a decline in sales attributed to the end of the Korean War. The title was a companion to Kurtzman’s comic book Two-Fisted Tales. Both titles depicted the horrors of war realistically and in great detail, exposing what Kurtzman saw as the truth about war without glamorizing or idealizing it.

PHP Theme Crash

by docweasel Jan 3 2023

A forced update for the php version rendered the custom theme I’d designed, based on a free theme, incompatible. It completely crashed, and no update was available. So, all the pages etc. were there but the design would have to be fixed.

We had exhausted our ‘file names’ limit, so we had to move to upgraded hosting, which meant moving all the sites. Unfortunately, the docweasel.com site was so huge the WP Import wouldn’t import, and on top of that the database was corrupted, in the worst way. The user table was damaged and I couldn’t log in. I tried all the methods of inserting a new admin and none worked. Not only that, the site wouldn’t upload files, wouldn’t update things like featured images, or settings. It would allow editing of posts and pages, oddly.

The first determination was the site needed to be split in two- the comics and the other features. It was just too big and didn’t allow for expansion, and there were many more comics we wanted to include. So, taking databases apart and importing piecemeal finally worked and docweaselcomix.com was born. I suggest using 2 domains to do something like this, because I could get a stable version, then import that database into docweaselcomix.net, experiment, then we I’d reached the next step import that db to the .com version.

All the sliders were lost, and had to be recreated. The uploads folder was a mess and had to be emptied and restocked. A lot of the present site, as much as possible, is hotlinked instead of using WP native uploader. This eliminates WP huge image database, the post that accompanies every image, all the thumbnails it makes (I put in plugins to thwart this, but WP still tries to make them through various plugins etc.) I edited a lot of plugin files to defeat thumb making.

Then I started to go through all the ‘wishlist’ comics and have begun adding them. Here we go!

WEIRD FANTASY

WEIRD FANTASY

EC Comics (1952-55)
Weird Fantasy is a science fiction anthology comic that was part of the EC Comics line in the early 1950s. The companion comic for Weird Fantasy was Weird Science. Over a four-year span, Weird Fantasy ran for 22 issues, ending with the November–December 1953 issue.

Artist/writer Harry Harrison claims credit for originally turning Gaines on to the idea of publishing science fiction. Harrison has stated that he and fellow artist Wally Wood were interested in science fiction and supplied Gaines with a lot of science fiction material to read. Harrison had no editorial control over the contents of the comic aside from his own stories, and he left EC by the end of 1950.

SLOW DEATH

SLOW DEATH

Last Gasp (1970-77)
On April 15, 1970 Ron Turner and Last Gasp published the company’s first comic book; the ironically titled Slow Death. Turner and the Last Gasp website still hold to the claim that the publishing date was the first Earth Day, but every documentation I’ve seen states that April 22, 1970 was the first official Earth Day (which kind of set the tone of Slow Death’s grasp of actual facts, since it presented itself as more than a comic book). In any case, Slow Death would turn out to be the most successful series Last Gasp published in the ’70s, running 11 issues; the first 10 were published from 1970-79 and the 11th was published 12+ years later in 1992.
