This all-Robert Crumb book is famous among underground comic fans for the story about Fritz the Cat getting murdered with an ice pick. Crumb had created Fritz as a young boy and the character became wildly popular after Fritz the Cat was published in 1968, but he was keenly disappointed by Ralph Bakshi’s X-rated film Fritz the Cat in 1972, and quickly killed the character to prevent any additional films (it didn’t work). Robbins’ first comics were printed in the East Village Other; she also contributed to the spin-off underground comic Gothic Blimp Works. In 1969, Robbins designed the costume for the Warren Publishing character Vampirella for artist Frank Frazetta in Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969). (more…)

Unlike many underground comics, there’s little information on Horny Stories & Comix. Script, Pencils, Inks & Letters are credited to Grass Green, th pen name of an artist who also went by Eric Dann, Oren Evers, Grass Hoppa, Richard “Grass” Green, Richard Eugene Green. Al Krapp Tand R. G. Wilerholt. This may have been an individual, several artists or an entire house going by one name. One reason for the lack of documentation is this title wasn’t from the classic golden age of underground comics, coming relatively late in the early ’90s. (more…)

In the summer of 1968, the trailblazing Zap Comix #1 caused many minds to be blown in major cities across America. Somewhere around the end of that summer, the even-more-daring Zap #2 hit the streets and many of those blown minds went into shock. Even some of the counterculture radicals who saw Zap #2 were disgusted by S. Clay Wilson’s depiction of one man cutting off the tip of another man’s penis and eating it. Many were outraged by Robert Crumb’s use of racist imagery to depict a sexually insatiable African junglewoman named Angelfood McSpade. (more…)

Of all the pop culture reference points that influenced underground comic creators and publishers, none were greater than EC Comics, which flourished during the childhoods of the forefathers of the underground. It seemed inevitable that underground artists would pay tribute to EC Comics, especially the horror and crime titles that broke new ground in depictions of terror and gore. Sure enough, Rip Off Comix launched Skull Comics just two years after Zap Comix enabled the type of content that EC once revelled in. (more…)

Psychotic Adventures Illustrated is the creepy yet beautiful creation of Charles Dallas, one of the true enigmas from the golden age of underground comix. Psychotic ran for just three issues, but they are filled with extended, nightmarish comic stories that Dallas specialized in so well. Dallas had multiple appearances in other titles, including Insect Fear, Paranoia, Skull Comics, Slow Death and Real Pulp Comics, but Psychotic was almost entirely his (Larry Todd produced one story for the third issue) and some of his best work can be found here. Then again, Dallas didn’t produce any work that really sucked, so you can’t go wrong seeking out anything he did. (more…)

When 1968 rolled into 1969, the underground comix revolution was well underway, but had not yet exploded. The epicenter of the movement was emerging in San Francisco, but in early 1969 New York City was still the place to be if a radical cartoonist wanted to get published. The East Village Other (EVO) had already been publishing works by future underground comic book creators Trina Robbins, Spain Rodriguez, Kim Deitch and Robert Crumb for a couple of years, and sales were booming (60,000+ units every week).

New Paltz Comix is an ambitious comic series launched by Michael T. Gilbert during his senior year at State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. The first issue was originally supposed to be published in early 1973 by the university student newspaper at New Paltz. They went so far as to shoot the film negatives for the printing, but then the newspaper’s staff blew the printing budget on an end-of-the-school-year party! (more…)
