If you’re a compassionate human being, you might feel a bit slimy after reading this provocative stew of filth. On the back cover, Felch Cumics proudly proclaims it is “Lower than Snatch” and then proceeds to prove itself right. It should come as no surprise that S. Print Mint October 1978
Lemme Outa Here! features features a handful of cartoonists conveying stories about life in the suburbs from the late 1940s to the ’60s. Diane Noomin, who edited the book and provided a funny DiDi Glitz story, stated the comic has “a theme of growing up in suburbia, growing up in America, and wanting to escape that.” (more…)
Kitchen Sink 1976
Published in America’s bicentennial year of 1976, An Army of Principles is Leonard Rifas’s ode to early American history, from the colonization of the country through the independence revolution and the 18th century. An Army of Principles covers a lot of territory (literally and figuratively) with efficiency and is a surprisingly entertaining read. (more…)

Print Mint (1971)
In Patrick Rosenkranz’s terrific tome, Rebel Visions, Barbara “Willie” Mendes says that “Don Donahue said All Girl Thrills was the worst comic he ever saw.” Now, I can’t pretend to know more about this than the legendary Donahue, who not only saw some of the finest comic books ever made but also published them, but I will declare his opinion is only partially correct. Rip Off Press March 1972
Amazon Comics is an underappreciated masterpiece from the golden era of underground comics. Frank Stack begins the book with an epic battle-of-the-sexes tale with a feminist slant and ends it with an academic debate about the same story at a gathering of college professors and one notable graduate student. This is a terrific, funny and undervalued underground comic featuring remarkable art and insightful writing from Frank Stack. (more…)
Simon & Schuster (1963)
This isn’t really a comic, although the style and tone predicts the underground scene which was about to rise in the next 4 years or so after this publication. I won’t make it a habit of posting stuff like this but this one is kind of special. Enjoy, or skip it.
The Gashlycrumb Tinies: or, After the Outing is an alphabet book written by Edward Gorey that was first published in 1963 as the first of a collection of short stories called The Vinegar Works, the eleventh work by Gorey. (more…)
Big Muddy Comics (1972)
I enjoyed Cosmic Capers from Big Muddy Comics and Swamp Fever is another enjoyable (if more peculiar) book. By far the most unique story here is “Split! Splat!” by Ned Dameron. I dare say it’s one of the more remarkable stories from the golden age of the undergrounds; an utterly wicked 10 pages of swamp-infested, critter-crawlin’, pagan worshipping craziness. (more…)
Added 6 classic single issue r. crumb comics to the 2 issues of BIGASS, including some of his most ‘misogynistic.
Some reorganization on the site. We eliminated the R. Crumb category, which was kind of a catch-all of single issues. However, we have now accumulated enough Print Mint/Apex (they often published the same titles or took over each other’s titles) and Golden Gate to make separate categories.
Others were moved to Rip-Off Press, Kitchen Sink and Last Gasp.
