Ted Richards launches his country-boy E.Z. Wolf character deep into space and the spiritual cosmos in Astral Outhouse, which compiles a series of strips that originally appeared in the Berkeley Barb in the mid ’70s. Richards developed the story from a single gag about an “time-traveling outhouse” in his weekly E. Z. Wolf strip. Up until the outhouse idea came to Richards, E.Z. Wolf had been comprised of one-joke strips, but the outhouse concept went on for months and was eventually compiled by Last Gasp. Much of the content deals with Richard’s viewpoint on the Spiritual Consciousness Business movement, which took place nationally, but especially in the San Francisco area, in the mid ’70s.
I didn’t enjoy E.Z. Wolf’s Astral Outhouse quite as much as the “regular” E.Z. Wolf comic book that came out a bit later, but there’s still plenty of good stuff to be found here.
