Short Order #2 runs eight pages longer than the first issue, giving editor Art Spiegelman the opportunity to invite a few more artists to contribute. Spiegelman also reduces his own contributions to the book, from 14 pages to 10, which include the inside front cover and back cover (two excellent one-page comics). Bill Griffith and Joe Schenkman also cut back on their pages, allowing George Kuchar, Jay Kinney, Michael McMillian, Willy Murphy, Rory Hayes and Diane Noomin to add their contributions.
The larger roster of artists gives the book more balance in the type of comics presented. Amongst the highlights include Kinney’s stylish “Dry Ice,” a four-pager that projects trends from the mid ’70s into the future. Bill Griffith takes another shot at fashionistas with “The Schlockpeople.” Rory Hayes shows how disgruntled customers can doom a small business in “Granny Crackbaggy, The Short Order Cook.”
There’s nothing as arresting as Spiegelman’s “Prisoner On The Hell Planet” in this issue, but another solid comic closes this short-lived anthology.
