FEDS ‘N’ HEADS
Feds ‘n’ Heads
Rip Off Press (1968)
One of the first, and most popular, underground comix in history. After a first printing of 5,000 books in 1968, over 200,000 copies were sold by 1980. Feds ‘n Heads opens with one of Gilbert Shelton’s funniest Wonder Wart-Hog stories, but it is better known for the comic book debut of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, already popularized through extensive exposure in underground newspapers across the country. Hidden amongst the back pages is the classic Freak Brothers one-pager that launched the pothead motto: “Grass will carry you through times of no money better than money will carry you through times of no grass!” This Gilbert Shelton masterpiece is an ideal example of underground comics perfection, circa 1968.
